So there’s no use denying it…they’re here.
In fact they’ve been here—for a couple of days already—and you probably haven’t even noticed.
That’s how they roll…they creep around under the radar until, before you know it, they settle in, make themselves at home… and drink all your beer.
The brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr months.
Yep….you heard me…the brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr months.
Septembrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr…Octobrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr…Novbrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr…Decembrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
The brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr months.
You've already felt it...already seen it. The air, cool and damp in the mornings. The sun doesn’t rise over the peak of the house across the street as quickly as it used to, and when it does it shows itself at an odd, unfamiliar angle….
Not during the brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr months.
Oh sure, we say September’s warm and sunny with 3 more weeks of official summer to be had.
Labrrrrrrrrr Day, the “Prophet of Fall” be damned!
Plenty of beach time left and BBQ’s to be had.
But yet…it’s never quite the same.
That lowering sun, glaring in our eyes, where no glare used to be.
And the kids…where are all the kids?
Not on the beach…nor the water; warm enough to wallow in ‘til October.
Just a few die-hard vets remain, at first defiant; the brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr months be damned!
Until slowly, they don long sleeves, then jeans whose unforgiving waist bands mysteriously shrink this time of year.
Soon, it’s…”where have all the shorts gone?
Oh, they pop out, occasionally, from time to time, from their hiding places as our tans slowly disappear, until finally, so do they.
They leave without a whimper, stoic soldiers of the summer that they are.
No goodbye…not even a card….

No goodbye…not even a card….
Shorts are funny that way; at least mine.
Crisp fall days and the bright colors of foliage death are not without their merits; at least for us…not so much the foliage.
Sweet red apples and cider by the gallon. Pumpkin patches and scores of trick or treaters to scare.
Turkeys in the oven, happy folks slinging Snoopy in the big parade…until finally holiday cheer, be it genuine or insincere.

Which brings us to the wary months.
Another story for another day.
But don’t despair. The short months quickly follow that…March, April, May…
And then we do it all again….
Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr it’s chilly out here!
This year I’ll get someone to hold the ladder….
Most enjoyable as usual Brian the graphics are terrific and very entertaining in make the apt point. I particularly like the ladder and the guy having fallen off. I wouldn't mind having your permission to use that in one of my recent missives.
